FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CLARK, NJ – The Johnson
Crusaders boys’ tennis team (8-3, 4-1) opened up the month of May with a 3-2 victory over the Roselle Park Panthers
on Tuesday afternoon at the Johnson Tennis Courts. The win gives Johnson their eighth victory of the season, equaling their
entire win total from 2006, where they finished 8-7 overall.
The match featured the varsity debut of junior Ryan Couch, who played in the
clinching second doubles match with freshman Eric Ginocchio, a 6-0, 6-1 victory. While it marked the first career victory
for Couch, Ginocchio won his ninth match of the season, the most wins for a freshman in a single season since Mike Monagle
won 18 matches at third singles in 2002.
Another historic mark is that for the first time in the modern era, Johnson
will be sending a doubles team to the NJSIAA State Tournament, as James Villari and John Monagle wrapped up a berth with a
6-1, 6-1 victory. First doubles finished at 8-3 at the tournament deadline, a 72.7% winning percentage, surpassing the necessary
qualifying mark of 70%.
Johnson will return to action on Thursday afternoon when they welcome the Newark
Technology Panthers to the Johnson Tennis Courts in Clark for a 4:00 p.m. start.
