FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 19, 2008
CLARK, NJ – Arthur L Johnson boys’
tennis coach Craig D’Amico announced the varsity schedule for the 42nd season of Johnson Tennis, one that
includes matches against nine teams that qualified for the 2007 NJSIAA State Tournament and two teams that advanced to the
Tournament of Champions.
“We are very excited about our 2008
slate. We will be greatly challenged through our non-conference schedule, and that will only help us when if comes time for
MVC play,” said D’Amico.
For the second consecutive season, Johnson
opens up their season against a Mountain Valley Conference Mountain Division foe, as they travel to Cranford for a match-up with the
Cougars on April 1. This marks the first time since 2006 that Johnson opens up their season on the road.
Johnson’s home opener at the Johnson
Tennis Courts comes the following day when the Crusaders host the Union Farmers. The Blue and White will also make their first
regular season trip since 2003 to the Donald Van Blake Tennis Courts, the site of the Union County Tournament on Friday, April
4.
The Crusaders will have a busy week during
the week of April 14 as Johnson is slated to play five consecutive days of matches, their first such stretch since 2004. Four
years ago, Johnson played five consecutive days, in the middle of a stretch of seven matches in eight days, from April 19
to April 23 and went 4-1. This time, the five day stretch will feature a key conference clash with Governor Livingston on
Tuesday, April 15 and a match against the defending NJSIAA State Champions, the Westfield Blue Devils, on Wednesday, April
16.
Jonathan Dayton, a participant in last
year’s Tournament of Champions, will host Johnson on Tuesday, April 22 in the Crusaders final match prior to the 2008
Union County Tournament. The annual county competition will take place April 24 and 25 in Plainfield.
Highlights of Johnson's schedule following
the state cut-off date, include a trip to Watchung Hills for the first ever tennis meeting between the two schools,
and matchups with county foes Summit and Scotch Plains,
in the first tennis meetings since the 2003 and 2004 seasons respectively.
Johnson is scheduled to conclude their
2008 campaign with Senior Day on Tuesday, May 20 at the JTC against Union Catholic.
The Blue and White will look to improve
on a 2007 season where they finished 12-7 with an experienced team returning in 2008.
