PLAINFIELD, N.J. - The Johnson
Crusaders advanced in three of the five positions in the opening day of the 2008 Union County Tournament. First singles player
Chris Tylutki, and both the first and second doubles teams will play for 5-8 place and a top 8 team finish, when the tournament
resumes tomorrow morning in Plainfield.
Tylutki, seeded eighth, earned
his first career UCT victory in his third try with a hard fought victory over ninth seeded Andrew Vance of Summit. Tylutki was leading 6-4, 5-1 when Vance was forced to retire due to injury. In the
second round, Tylutki met up with Westfield and the tournament’s
top seeded player, Kevin Shallcross. Shallcross advanced to the semi finals with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. On Friday, Tylutki will
meet Glendenning of New Providence in the first back-draft semi-final.
Seniors Mike Keenan and Luke
Ginocchio were both upset in singles competition during the tournament’s first round. Keenan, the ninth seed, dropped
a 6-1, 6-1 decision to eighth seeded Scott Leyden of Scotch Plains at second singles. Ginocchio
was ousted following a 7-6(3), 6-2 defeat at third singles to Matt Zolenski of Union Catholic.
The seventh seeded first doubles
team of James Villari and Joe Broccoli advanced with a strong 6-2, 6-0 victory over Elizabeth, and Johnson’s third seeded
second doubles tandem of Eric Ginocchio and Joe Mignoli advanced with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Union. Both pairs suffered tight
second round defeats, first doubles 7-6(2), 6-2 to Summit,
and second doubles 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to Governor Livingston. Both pairs will also resume play on Friday.
Johnson will attempt to make
a top half county finish for the second straight season as the tournament concludes on Friday at the Donald Van Blake Tennis
Courts in Plainfield, NJ.
